Summary
This is a full-time, classified position in the Student Services division Advising Center at North Seattle Community College (NSCC). Continuation of this position is contingent upon funding. This position reports to the Running Start Student Success Specialist and provides information and advising services to all students specializing in Running Start regarding NSCC policies and procedures, course eligibility, program requirements, course selection and the development of educational plans. This position also assists the Running Start Student Success Specialist and the Associate Dean of Student Success Services and provides program support to the Running Start program and Advising/Student Success Services.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
• Assist all students specializing in Running Start students with course selection and the development of educational plans, assessment of incoming credits, interpretation of test results, college transfer and professional/technical programs and degree requirements, college admissions requirements, and NSCC policies and procedures.
• Provide information on Running Start policies and procedures to students, parents, high school and college personnel.
• Track and assess all students specializing in Running Start students progress toward degree or certificate requirements and make appropriate referrals for students in need of academic or personal counseling.
• Maintain student records, Running Start student records and prepare reports.
• Assist with the implementation of the Running Start book library.
• Attend Advising/Student Success Department and other applicable meetings.
• Prepare and update general advising and Running Start advising materials.
• Provide presentations for general new student orientations and Running Start orientations.
• Participate in student development, retention, and recruitment activities.
• Collaborate with appropriate college departments and staff to coordinate and implement Running Start student processes.
• Liaison with high school counselors and college personnel regarding the Running Start Program.
• Maintain working knowledge of articulation agreements between NSCC and four-year colleges and universities.
• Communicate and work respectfully and effectively with people from diverse backgrounds such as racial, ethnic, religious, linguistic, gender, age, sexual orientation, socio-economic, and with diverse physical and learning disabilities.
• Perform other related essential duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS & ABILITIES
• High School graduation or equivalent AND
• Two (2) years experience in college advising OR
• Equivalent education/experience.
• Demonstrated experience working effectively with persons from diverse backgrounds, such as racial, ethnic, religious, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic, and diverse physical and learning disabilities.
• Strong customer service skills.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Bachelor’s degree in Education, Student Development, or a related field.
• Student services experience within the Washington community college system.
• Ability to work under pressure, and to explain policies and programs with sensitivity and awareness of different students’ needs.
• Computer skills, including database management; Excel, Access.
• Familiarity with on-line student management systems.
• Strong written communication and listening skills.
• Strong organizational skills, ability to set priorities and meet deadlines, work both independently and collaboratively.
• Ability to establish and maintain collaborative working relationships.
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
• Requires sitting for prolonged periods of time.
• Requires operating a telephone and computer/electronic equipment.
• Requires having general vision, hearing and listening, and speaking clearly.
• Requires performing on a daily basis reading and writing English, basic arithmetic, drawing conclusions, analyzing data, searching for solutions, creating methodologies, and managing resources/directing projects.
• Requires working under pressure and rapidly for prolonged periods of time.
• Requires working indoors, at a desk, bench or window, in an office or control room for long periods of time.
SCHEDULE: 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday. Occasional evening hours are required.

This position is in a union shop bargaining unit. As a condition of employment, you must within 30 days after appointment (1) become a member of the Washington State Federation of State Employees (WFSE), or (2) pay a representative fee, or (3) pay a non-association fee. Non–payment of such fee is grounds for dismissal. Any dispute between you and the employee organization as to the amount of the representation fee can be resolved only under procedures provided by the employee organization, not the employer.
