Mary Sherhart, B.A., 1999

April 24, 2012

Mary Sherhart is the recipient of the Aspasia Phoutrides Pulakis Award which is given annually by Seattle’s Ethnic Heritage Council to an individual who has contributed significantly to a Northwest ethnic community.

She is one of America’s leading artists in Balkan singing and one of the few non-native artists to be recognized and loved by ethnic audiences and honored and accepted as a gifted singer in the traditional urban genre of Bosnia and Herzegovina, sevdah. She is the first president of the Sevdah North America, a nonprofit educational organization formed to promote and preserve the traditional urban music of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

In Seattle, Mary has created musical projects that build bridges between East European communities and the general public. She directs the annual Evening of Sevdah, about which the Seattle PI wrote in 2008: “What was readily apparent was the affection and commitment to this music from the excellent singers and instrumentalists, either having been born in the region, or with ethnic roots, or for the sheer love of the music itself.”

Mary always includes a strong message of finding one’s passion in life and the joy and healing of music.
She excels at building bridges through the shared joy of music, overcoming political differences in the Balkan community, bringing Serbs, Bosnians, Croatians, Bulgarians, Macedonians, and Americans together to share the universal joy of music.

She is also a recipient of the 2006 Artist Trust / Washington State Arts Commission Fellowship. Most
importantly, Mary is the mother of three fabulous children.

Wendy Maguire, B.A. 1996

April 18, 2011

I need to reduce my work hours as I am returning to Antioch University Seattle as a Whole Systems Design student who is focused on sustainable business models. As a result, I have left the position as Controller for a local coffee roaster and am touting my bookkeeping services. The goal is to build a client base with 20-30 hours of scheduled work per week.

As a Certified Public Bookkeeper, QuickBooks Pro-Adviser (Enterprise Certified), you can count on me for help with strategizing and setting up a seamless accounting system.
As a consultant, it has become evident that many times resources are not designated for bookkeeping systems up front. This can lead to a clean-up that is more costly and time consuming. That said, I have helped many companies to organize their accounting systems and taken chaos to order. Simply stated, I can help you put together a top rate accounting system whether you are a start-up or have a major clean-up.

In many cases, small business owners and non-profit organizations will spend accountant rates on simple bookkeeping services, or the inverse, pay an entry level person to do bookkeeping service which are outside of their range of experience. One cost saving measure is to create a system where the basic data entry is done by an entry level person, overseen by a part time bookkeeper who reviews entries, files monthly and quarterly taxes, processes payroll and prepares financial statements. In turn the financial statements are passed on to an accountant at year end who completes income taxes and year- end adjustments. It is good to have a working relationship between accountant and bookkeeper so that high level questions on process can be sorted out.

If you are in need of bookkeeping services or you know someone who can use my help don’t hesitate to call me. Eric Warn has my resume upon request and references are available as well.

Warmest regards,
Wendy L. Maguire, B.A. ’96

Twylia Westling, B.A. 2010

March 4, 2011

Twylia recently moved in to a new position with StandUp For Kids Tacoma where she is now one of two co-executive directors for the program. She is primarily responsible for the ‘people’ side of her organization, making sure that the volunteers are properly trained, empowered, encouraged and supported in their work to help end the cycle of homelessness for unaccompanied youth in Pierce County.

Twylia is very excited to move into this new position and feels very honored to put the skills she learned at Antioch University Seattle to use in a real-world environment. Oh, and she is doing this while also holding down a 40 hour a week job and raising her family!

Thanks so much!
