Two New City of Seattle Initiatives
February 28, 2012
From Alumni Director Eric Warn:
Here are two new initiatives sent to by the City of Seattle that may be of interest to you.
Our City, Our Food, Our Future Listening Sessions
Access to healthy, affordable food is vital to our community. We’re working to increase access to healthy food for everyone in Seattle, not just those who can afford it. It’s one of the most important things we can do as a community to live longer, lead healthier lives, promote equity, and help our environment.
The City recently hired a new Food Policy Advisor, who is working in our Office of Sustainability and Environment to create an action agenda that further improves people’s ability to grow, eat, and sell local and healthy food in Seattle.
Listening Sessions will be held:
Tuesday March 13, 5:30-8:30 p.m. – Ravenna Eckstein Community Center (6535 Ravenna Avenue NE)
Friday March 16, 1:00-4:00 p.m. – City Hall – Bertha Knight Landes Room (600 4th Avenue)
Monday March 19, 5:30-8:30 p.m. – Southside Commons (3518 S Edmunds Street)

Seattle Food Forest
Seattle’s vision of an urban food oasis is going forward. A seven-acre plot of land in the city’s Beacon Hill neighborhood will be planted with hundreds of different kinds of edibles: walnut and chestnut trees; blueberry and raspberry bushes; fruit trees, including apples and pears; exotics like pineapple, yuzu citrus, guava, persimmons, honeyberries, and lingonberries; herbs; and more. All will be available for public plucking to anyone who wanders into the city’s first food forest.

March Clinical Forum of the Puget Sound Adlerian Society
February 28, 2012
From Dan Dodd, M.A. Psychology ‘01:
You are invited to our First Friday Forum on Mar. 2 titled “Clinical Conversations” with Steven A. Maybell, Ph.D. Please RSVP to psas@att.net if you plan to come.
This gathering may be reminiscent of those that Alfred Adler, having broken away from Freud, held weekly at a Vienna coffee house some 100 years ago. Then, anyone was welcome to attend who was interested in how psychology applies to the whole of life, and everyone is welcome now. This gathering will be a humane and meaningful conversation in the spirit of the early Adlerian society. (In contrast, Freud’s meetings were restricted to invited male physicians.)
As Adler said, “(Adlerian) Psychology instructs in self-understanding, the understanding of others, independence, and encouragement. . . . Its foremost task is to establish among the
broad masses of the people a firm basis for a sound, optimistic view and conduct of life, promoting the welfare of all.”
For our gathering, participants are encouraged to bring clinical issues they would like addressed (depression, anxiety, dreams, early recollections, trauma, loss), counseling cases they would like to consult about (it’s important to not use actual names and to refrain from sharing any identifying information about the client), or questions you would like to see addressed (how to deal with client resistance, how to deal with couples who are openly derogatory in your office, what to do when a teenager doesn’t engage in session and gives only one-word answers. Steve will encourage participants to share their ideas so as to take advantage of individual and synergistic collective wisdom.
With over 40 years of experience in the mental-health counseling and therapy field, Steve is deeply devoted to Adlerian Psychology and its application to his work and his life. He is the Director of the Student Counseling Center and Professor in Marriage and Family Therapy at Seattle Pacific University. He was just recognized as Supervisor of the Year for the Washington Association of Marriage and Family Therapy and Supervisor of the Year for the University of
Washington School of Social Work.
Steve holds Diplomate standing in Adlerian Psychology, Clinical Social Work, and Professional Psychotherapy. He is a Clinical Fellow and Approved Supervisor of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy. He is dedicated to a model of therapy that emphasizes mutual respect, collaboration, tapping the wisdom within each client, contributing to the client’s sense that they matter, they make sense, and there are new possibilities available for them to live a life of greater quality. He also practices reprocessing therapy (Lifespan Integration and EMDR), powerful tools to assist clients in moving beyond trauma and discouraging experiences in their
past. He is now the proud and involved grandfather of grandsons Nate (almost 4) and Jude (1 ½).
Educational objectives (for CE hours and clock hour certificates):
1. Participants will learn from discussion of examples how Adlerian Psychology can apply in specific cases and situations.
2. Participants will learn more of the process of relating to others, including clients, with mutual respect, collaboration, and awareness of new possibilities.
We’ll begin at 7:30 p.m. with tea, coffee, snacks, and a brief get-acquainted time and conclude by 9:30. The PSAS Board meets until about 7:20, so kindly time your arrival accordingly.
