Stress and Your Local Fire Department, According to AUS Alum

September 13, 2011

Stress-induced psychological and physiological disorders top the list of health problems in industrialized nations, and fire departments should be proactive with stress management to avoid firefighter burnout — this according to a Antioch University Seattle alumnus and clinical psychologist who spoke at Fire-Rescue International last month.

Alum Looking for Feedback

August 13, 2011

Hello Friends,

For some of you we just spoke recently, for most others, it’s been a while.

One reason for that is a project that I’ve been working on since November. I’ve been a part of the EcoMyths Alliance, a non-profit environmental education group dedicated to science based research, awareness and publication. Think MythBusters but exclusively focused on environmental myths. We’re partnered with a lot of great organizations such as: DePaul University, the Alliance for the Great Lakes, Brookfield Zoo, The Field Museum, the US Forest Service, US Fish & Wildlife, Chicago Wilderness and several others.

I’d appreciate it if you’d visit our newly launched web site at http://ecomythsalliance.org and take a gander. If you like what you see at our web site, feel free to subscribe to our mailing list, friend us on FaceBook, follow us on Twitter and spread the word by telling your friends.

Any feedback you have is welcome. Thanks for your time and hope to talk to you soon.

Are you in the midst of a major life transition?
Do you seek greater clarity regarding your life’s purpose and meaning?
Do you seek to live a more authentic, passionate and inspired life?

The Adult Wilderness Quest derives from an ancient ritual ceremony that has been re-imagined as a powerful and dynamic wilderness experience for contemporary men and women who seek to discover the deep wisdom of their souls and bring that wisdom into their lives and into the world. Questers retreat from daily routines, distractions, and responsibilities to travel this inner journey in a beautiful wilderness setting.

With a small supportive community of questers and experienced guides, you’ll participate in experiential and insightful activities as well as ritual and ceremony to help you prepare to sit with courage for your three-day solo vigil and fast. On your return, you’ll share stories, explore the meaning of experiences you have been given and celebrate your return.

Paddle to Swinomish Information

June 30, 2011

From AUS Alum Patricia Paul:

Every year the tribes of the Salish Sea travel to a host tribe’s village. The journey is a celebration of culture - strengthening language, music, and traditions. The journey can be understood by visiting these links at youtube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tkFGFr4KZCk&feature=youtu.be

http://youtu.be/QEENkIHMiYw

In 2011, the Swinomish Tribe at La Conner will be hosting this historic cultural event for a week of celebration. Volunteers are greatly needed for this event to be held on July 25 - 31 to assist with meals, transportation, recycling, safety, organization, and medical to make this event possible.

To volunteer for this important celebration, go to the volunteer section of paddletoswinomish.com, choose your job category, and your shifts. Shifts range from four to eight hours. Look for the VolunteerSpot Icon in each category and it will lead you to the calendar for that category. Clicking on the green volunteer icon and looking at the calendar does not obligate you to do a job. Feel free to browse all the calendars before deciding where you might best fit.

The film addresses a major issue that has our country embroiled in controversy: Who and what causes a mass shooter to go on a killing spree? Are any of us safe?  What about gun laws? Tuthill, who has a Masters Degree in Psychology from Antioch University Seattle, believes the answers lie in the systemic abuse of America’s children in both macro and micro contexts. Tuthill offers up some answers as to the underbelly of all the unanswered whys…

AUS Alumna in China Looking For Assistance From U.S. Alums

May 2, 2011

Dear alumni, friends and family members from around the globe,

Warmest greetings from Hefei, Anhui, China. I wonder if you may be of some assistance to me. I have accepted a position of principal at an English training school called Happy Education, which will begin in the fall in Hefei. This training center, like the majority of English schools in the city of 5 million, is in dire need of learning resources such as books and games, among other things.

All of you are my connections to the English-speaking world, and if there were ever a time I would wish for some assistance - now is it. I wonder if you or someone you know might be willing to sponsor a small donation for children books and other things like games to be sent to my new school by September.

This could be a great service-learning project for a group of young people, or for anyone. As this email is being sent to a number of you, my hope is that a few people will respond. The number of boxes that could be sent could be as few as one. The school has no books, no games, no resources, nothing except for their English workbook. The teachers with whom I will work have a dearth of knowledge about modern approaches to and resources for education.

If you have interest or could be of assistance, please reply by the end of May, and we will communicate further about details. Debra Alderman, M.A. Education ‘05, continuing education director (dalderman@antioch.edu) at Antioch will help coordinate things from the U.S. end.

I’m very excited about this new opportunity. I’m taking on this job as a 3-5 year development project or longer. I welcome those of you at schools to be sister-partners in some way, perhaps with the
possibilities for future technology-based cultural exchanges.

Eager to hear from all of you.

With deepest appreciation for your consideration,
Barbra (Levine) Pakravan, M.A. Education ‘03

Rite of Passage Mentor Training Program

April 29, 2011

From Darcy Ottey, M.A. Environment & Community ‘04:

Rite of Passage Mentor Training Program

Facilitating a significant, and culturally relevant, rite of passage is an art. It demands of the initiator to be fully rooted in authentic service and deeply connected to the wilderness inwardly and outwardly. It takes a fully committed guide who is willing to weave meaning and value into the passage of every day.

Participation in this personal and professional development program will prepare you to co-create and lead a powerful one- to three-week rite of passage program; including insights into the behind-the-scenes logistics and preparations. During this Apprenticeship you will:

Study and implement our time-tested Rite of Passage curriculum;
Gain an in-depth understanding of mentorship;
Learn and use valuable wilderness skills;
Practice Ritual Leadership;
Develop leadership and facilitation skills; and
Practice within the context of one of our amazing programs.

“Before I came to Journeys, I had been wanting to work with youth in the outdoors for quite some time. I was so excited to hear that I had been accepted into the Apprentice Program. It really was a dream come true. I learned so much in those few weeks from being in the wilderness — just seeing how my fellow mentors worked with the youth taught me how to step in as a leader. I learned how to trust my instincts, follow my intuition and be of service in the best way possible. I also got a chance to see how capable I am! I know that this experience will continue to impact me for the rest of my life.” Melissa, Apprentice Program Participant 2010.

Applications are now being accepted for 2011 Apprentices. Call (425) 485.7396 or email info@riteofpassagejourneys.org if you would like to apply. We have a limited number of Apprentice positions available. Visit www.RiteofPassageJourneys.org for more information.

Selected Apprentices will participate in an individualized one-day orientation; help plan, prepare and lead a one- to three-week Journeys program; and receive one-on-one mentorship with a senior Journeys Staff person. Apprentices will also be invited (not a requirement) to our Annual All Staff Training in early June offering a variety of ‘continuing education’ topics for wilderness guides as well as our End of Summer Celebration and BBQ in September.

When: Varies, based on program dates (9 - 26 days long)
Cost: $1,001, some Financial Aid may be available if you apply now
Where: Songaia CoHousing, Bothell, WA (and our beautiful Washington National Parks!)

Apprentices will work directly with Journeys’ Executive Director, Darcy Ottey, who has been leading Rites of Passage for over 15 years, and who was initiated at age 13 by Journeys’ founder, Stan Crow. Darcy is an alumni of Antioch’s Environment and Community MA Program. Find out more about Darcy in the “About Us” section of our website.

We look forward to working with you this summer and supporting you as you develop into a soulful and confident wilderness leader.
