Alumna To Offer Weekly Theater Class For Middle School Students With Unique Personalities

March 18, 2010

Antioch University Seattle alumna Karen Noble-Newman, MA Psychology ’01, LMHC, and Lauren Marshall, MFA, theater teaching artist and parent to a child with Asperger’s, will be teaching Theater of Possibility–Rehearsing Social Skills Through Acting and Improv, a weekly theater class designed for middle school students with unique personalities. Sponsored by Seattle Public Theater.

The theater class is especially geared toward youth with Asperger’s, ADHD, and other social skills challenges. Noble-Newman and Marshall will use theater games and improv to practice social skills in a fun and supportive environment. It starts Thursday, April 8 and runs for 10 weeks on Thursdays from 6-7:30 at Billings Middle School in Seattle’s Greenlake neighborhood. A longer session will be held on the last day for forum theater performance. Small group size: 6-10 children.

TOP is an acting/improv class for 6th-8th graders with unique personalities. It is especially geared towards youth with Asperger’s, ADHD, NVLD and other social skill challenges. Youngsters without a diagnosis who have a flair for the dramatic or who are intrigued by acting will also fit right in.

TOP helps youth navigate the intensely social world of middle school. Through fun and zany theater games, improv exercises, and role playing Noble-Newman and Marshall will explore the dynamics of friendship and practice responses to teasing, exclusion, and bullying. Group members will have opportunities to experiment with non-verbal communication, to learn about social nuances, to understand another’s perspective, and to practice flexibility all while having fun and expressing their authentic selves loudly and creatively.

The fee is $549 for Spring Quarter. Payment plans and partial scholarships are available. Contact Karen Noble-Newman for more details at 206 909-1937 or e-mail her at karennoblenewman@hotmail.com. Two Alumnae To Present Digital Storytelling Workshop for Community Organizations

March 18, 2010

Sue Woehrlin, M.A. Whole Systems Design ‘82 and a current AUS core faculty member in the B.A. Liberal Studies program, along with Elizabeth Burke, M.A. Whole Systems Design ‘03, are leading a workshop on digital storytelling for community organizations May 13-15.

Digital stories are personal narratives weaving together voice, images and sound into a 2-3 minute video and can be a powerful community organizing and advocacy strategy to promote a non-profit’s cause. In this workshop, twelve to fifteen multimedia novices will use accessible tools available for free on most laptops.

Lead trainers Natasha Freidus of Creative Narrations along with Burke and Woehrlin will introduce participants to story development techniques, audio recording, image manipulation and video editing. Participants will also learn how non-profits around the country are using digital stories as effective fundraising, outreach and educational tools.

Workshop will be held from 9.a.m. to 4 p.m. at the 2100 Building (2100 24th Ave South, Seattle WA 98144. Participants required to bring their own laptops. All other equipment will be provided. Alumna Looking For Work in Diversity Field

March 5, 2010

I am seeking part-time employment, and I am very interested in the field of diversity.  I am particularly interested in research and assessment regarding diversity, and am open to administrative work, as well as project work.  I am returning to work after several years at home and as a volunteer, and any assistance or referrals are appreciated.  I would love to talk with alumni or others in the field, as well, to learn more about what is currently taking place.  I live in Edmonds, and am available for areas from downtown Seattle and north.  Thank you in advance for any information, referrals, and assistance!

Alumna Seeks Expertise

March 1, 2010

I’m wondering if there are any Antioch Alumni who have development expertise they would like to donate to Blacks In Government (B.I.G.)  The e-mail below lists some of the workshop topics desired for the B.I.G. Regional Training Conference.   If so, I would appreciate if they can contact LaCretiah Claytor at Claytor.l@portseattle.org.

I thought this would provide alumni both an opportunity to build one’s network and to donate to a worthy organization.  Although it doesn’t include information about the RTC, I’ve attached this link to the National site: http://www.bignet.org/ for general and historical information about B.I.G.

Alumna Helps People Date

February 23, 2010

Hello Eric!

I’m sending you this email to let you know about a new development in my therapy practice. As you know, I’ve been developing my practice since I graduated with an M.A. in Psychology from Antioch in 2008, but the one issue that I did my best work with was helping people date. I’ve been working on incorporating this into my clinical practice, but what I’ve decided to do is spin out a seperate practice of date coaching.

In this practice, I start by working with clients to identify the beliefs that they hold that are keeping them from finding that special someone. These beliefs sometimes sound like “there’s no one for me to date in this town,” “there are no single people in my age range,” or “I can’t start dating until I lose 30 pounds.” There’s a neverending list of reasons why people belief they can’t be successful in dating, but each person’s beliefs are different.

After we’ve identified the beliefs that are blocking a client’s path, I use creative techniques to put into words and images to put together the picture of the ideal partner. At this point, it’s only a matter of weeks usually until this suitable mate walks into the client’s life. I’ve seen in work a number of times, it’s even worked for me.

I’m also been doing a lot of work with people who are going through breakups as well. I see these times as an opportunity to guide people to greater fulfillment and happiness–many times I can guide them to a better-suited partner for their next relationship.

I’m excited to share this new development with you Eric, and I hope that you can pass the message along to other Antioch alums. Check out my website for more information: http://www.KateLStewart.com. Look at  my Dr. Love Dating Blog if you’d like to see more ideas and tips on dating.

Thanks for your help, Eric!

Seattle Weight Training Classes - Any Recommendations?

February 12, 2010

I live in the North End of Seattle and need to find a non-noisy gym with a class.  (Note: Body Pump class is not it for me.) Or a reasonably priced trainer who will come to the Spartan Gym in Shoreline. I like the “Gravity” system at Prorobics but it is to far from where I live. Defined Fitness in Bellvue has a great program - to far and to much $$. Appreciate any suggestions. BTW, I am very petite .. 50 something.. if you  get my proactive drift.

Alumna Needs Advice

February 9, 2010

Hi,

This may be a long shot but it never hurts to ask. I’m spending alot of time in California helping out with my 88 year old mother. I would love and need a very flexible job. I am thinking something done over the internet so I can be here and in Seattle as needed. I have looked at the “work from home” websites promising thousands of dollars but most of those are scams. I have a background in nursing/psychology and teaching. If alumni have any suggestions or ideas, they would be very much appreciated.

Thanks,

Donna Austin
